HISTORY
A house with a history!
The original Emma House was already founded in 1681. Not at the current location, but in the old historic center of Rotterdam, where the Reformed Diaconate of the Reformed Church at that time had purchased several buildings for the care of the poor.
In the first half of the 20th century, the Diaconate had plans to build a completely new and large Emma House on the Schiekade. These plans became reality in 1932 when, after a competition had been held, the choice fell on the building design by the architectural firm of P. Hooykaas and M. Lockhorst from Rotterdam.
The extensive Emmahuis, situated between the Schiekade and the Van der Sluisstraat, provided for the needy elderly in the large western part of the complex and the elderly from the wealthy class in the iconic building on the Schiekade.
